Program of Study

Requirements

Regardless of your major, any Appalachian Student can obtain the Global Connections Certificate, provided that the following criteria are met:

  • Foreign Language: Students must complete the equivalent of at least 2 years of sequential college-level coursework in foreign language (the equivalent of 4 courses or 12 credit hours, usually met by the 1050/1060 class level).
  • International Experience: Students must participate in an international service-learning program, a short-term study abroad program, or other similar international experience in a location related to their language of study. These programs must involve at least (1) 3-hour course.
  • International Content: Students must take 9 credit hours of "international content" coursework in addition to the foreign language coursework required above in #1. 
  • Community Service: Students must complete at least 40 hours of service or outreach related to diversity issues, multicultural issues, and/or study abroad experiences. Need ideas? Look here.

How to apply

When you complete your graduation check the semester before you plan to graduate, complete the Global Connections Certificate Program of Study (DOCX, 47 KB) and send it via email to Dr. Alexandra Hellenbrand, faculty director of the Global Connections Certificate at hellenbranda@appstate.edu.

The portfolio must be submitted by November 1 for December graduation of the same year; by April 20 for May/August graduation of the same year. Students will find the questions to be addressed in the portfolio here (DOCX, 16 KB).
